ADVENT DAY 27

Isaiah 11:1,10

“Out of the stump of Jesse, will grow a shoot - yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root. In that day the heir to David’s throne- will be a banner of salvation to all the world.”

Who is Jesse?

Jesse is a man from the tribe of Judah.

He lived in Bethlehem during the reign of King Saul - in about 1050 BC.

He had 8 sons, the Bible tells us that they were tall, strong, and handsome.

In 1 Samuel 16, the prophet Samuel is told by God to go to the home of Jesse in Bethlehem to anoint 1 of his sons to be the next King of Isreal.

After Samuel heard “no” 7 times, he asked Jesse if he has any more sons who aren’t home…

There was 1 more - a boy named, David - Jesse’s youngest son.

He wasn’t even home when the King’s prophet came to visit his family for dinner! Why wasn’t David required to be home for this event!?

David was in a field watching sheep, and was told to go home. When Samuel saw him - God spoke and Samuel anointed David - King of Israel, in front of his 7 older brothers and his father, Jesse.

David was blessed and he went on to do great things for God - including conquering Goliath.

In time, after King Saul’s death, he became King David of Israel.

David & his son Solomon - became the wealthiest rulers that have ever lived on planet earth (according the the Bible’s inventory of King Solomon’s kingdom-more on this later)

More than wealth, David’s family line would be part of God’s plan to save all of mankind from sin and death.

Around 750 BC the prophet Isaiah recalls this event that took place in Jesse’s home.

Isaiah 11 says that Jesse’s family line is part of the fulfillment of a promise God has made in His Word.

The prophet Isaiah speaks for God and gives more details of the promise God spoke to Abraham in Genesis.

A promise that a descendant from Abraham, would be a way of salvation for all mankind.

Genesis 12:1-3

“Then the LORD told Abram, “Leave your country, your relatives, and your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you.” I will cause you to become the father of a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and I will make you a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you, and curse those who curse you. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you.”

This promise was the covenant God made with Abraham:

A land promise in verse 1

A great nation in verse 2

All mankind blessed through Abraham verse 3

Later on in Genesis, Jacob gives more detail to God’s promise.

As Jacob blesses his 12 sons before his death, he foretells of a mighty ruler that will descend from Judah’s tribe. When Jacob dies, he blesses his son Judah and his tribe like this:

Genesis 49:10

“The sceptor will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from his descendants, until the coming of the 1 to whom it belongs, the 1 who all nations will obey.

Jeremiah was written in about 575 BC after Isaiah.

Jeremiah 23:5-6

“For the time is coming,” says the LORD, “when I will place a righteous Branch on King David’s throne. He will be a King who rules with wisdom. He will do what is just and right throughout the land. And this is his name: The LORD IS OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”

Zechariah wrote this in about 480 BC:

Zechariah 3:8 - 9b “Listen to me, O Jeshua the high priest, and all you other priests. You are symbols of the good things to come. Soon I am going to bring my servant, the Branch, and I will remove the sins of this land in a single day.”

As we think about Jesus’s birth we can trace the history and see the fulfillment of God’s plan.

The Jesse that is in this story is part of His Story, and so are YOU!

Songs & Videos

Isaiah 43 is titled: ISREAL’S ONLY SAVIOR

Isaiah 43:19 says-

“See, I am doing a new thing!

Now it springs up, do you not perceive it?

I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland”!

Does this remind you of John the Baptist’s message?

Isaiah 40 is titled: COMFORT FOR GOD’S PEOPLE

Isaiah 40:3-5 says-

Listen! I hear the voice of someone shouting,

“Make a highway for the Lord through the wilderness.

Make a straight, smooth road through the desert for our God.”

It was Isaiah 40:3 that John the Baptist quoted. He claimed the he was the voice preparing the way for the Lord.

There are 4 Gospels re-telling the story of Jesus, and this is the only Old Testament verse that was quoted in all 4 of them.

In the VIDEO below, Lauren Daigle sings, “NOEL” (French for Christmas) and she asks, “Come and see what God has done!”
